ROLE PLAYING GUIDELINES
This is a set of guidelines to help new and inexperienced players better understand message board role playing, and to help everybody make the most of their games and most of all, enjoy themselves.
Creating a Character
The general rule is to make your characters as detailed and interesting as possible. Give them a personality, as well as a history, and try and tie these together. What does your character look like? Think about their strengths and weaknesses. Don't make your character brilliant at everything, because that quickly becomes boring. If you give your character some weaknesses and these situations are encountered in the game, it will be a lot more interesting and fun to play through.
Playing a Game
When your character participates in a role playing game, they will be interacting with other characters. Do not try and take over the game or make your character the most important. Also, ensure that your character is suitable for the game before you join. A role play based in a high school is probably not the best place if your character is a forty-year-old loner pirate who hates kids.
Also, be mindful that the topic/game creator is generally in charge of the game. What they say goes. If you think they are being unfair, please contact a moderator, or just leave the game.
Generally, you make your posts in character. Make sure you read every single post in the topic so that you understand what is going on before making your next post.
'God-modding' is when a player takes control over another player's character by making them do something, or makes their character undefeatable or invincible. This can happen on many different levels, but it is generally considered rude and unfair. An example would be if you made your character immortal, and they got stabbed by a weapon that can kill immortals, and you still refused to let your character die.
When you post, please try and use proper English to the best of your ability. Try and make your posts as clear as possible, so the other players understand what is happening. Writing in abbreviations or ignoring grammar can make your posts hard to understand.
Out of Character (OoC) Posting
When you participate in a role playing game, you make your posts in character. If you feel the need to make a comment, you make an out of character comment. This is done by clearly writing OoC:, and then making your comment. Most of the time you do this at either the beginning or end of your post. For example:
----------
In character posting goes here, continue the game.
OoC: I thought that was a great development in the plot...
----------
Leaving a Game
If you are planning on leaving a game, or even just taking a break, it is polite to inform the topic creator. That way they can arrange for your character to be absent temporarily or for someone else to control them, or for your character to exit. If other players are waiting for your character, it will hold up the game. You may also find that if a character stops playing for a long time with no reason, they may be killed off.
Creating a Game
If you create a game, you are in charge of the story and what happens. You are also in charge of non-playable characters. You may sometimes need to make decisions regarding the story. Your responsibility is to keep the game moving so that it doesn't become boring, so use your power to dictate this. However, don't let this power go to your head and boss other players around, or you may find they have all left! Do not harass any players, remember that this is still part of the general the message board and all of the rules apply in here.
When you create the game, make sure you give everybody all of the information they need to play. You don't need to spoil the story if you've got one, just make it clear.
Also, do not abandon your games. If you no longer wish to keep running it, draw it to a conclusion, or find somebody else to take over.
Common Role Play Abbreviations
Here are some abbreviations you may encounter:
OoC: Out of character
RP: Role play
RPG: Role playing game
NPC: Non Playable Character
Finally, if you're still unsure about something, send a private message to one of the moderators or someone you have seen participating in RPs. I'm sure they will be more than happy to help you out. |
